Performing - A Walk in the Park

January 21, 2017

At the end of 2016 we held our Geelong Singing Concert at The Courthouse Youth Arts Centre in Geelong.

On this night 22 students performed in front of a full house! The atmosphere was charged with excited energy and the loving support of family and friends who made up the audience.

I was incredibly proud of the students, many who were performing in front of an audience and on the stage for the first time.

It takes great courage to embrace the feelings of fear and vulnerability that are inevitable in the lead up to a performance. That initial trepidation is nearly always washed away and replaced with a great sense of joy and pride at a job well done!

Let's look at ways to make that performance feel like a walk in the park!

Be Prepared

Attend your lessons regularly, devote time to learning your song and practise regularly.

Choose the Right Song

Work with your teacher to find the song that highlights your talent. Spend time searching for the right fit and be open to new ideas.

Polish the Song

Spend time refining the performance with your teacher. Plan your outfit, map out the movements, make sure you are confident with the whole song, work on your expressions and how you will tell the story of the song.

Deal with Nerves

It is natural to feel nervous and can be a great motivator when you channel that feeling appropriately, however nerves can quickly become overwhelming. Learn to breathe deeply, acknowledge your fears and visualise your performance being all you want it to be. Address your concerns with your teacher who will have lots of strategies to help with deal with nerves.

Enjoy Yourself

Most importantly have fun! It's a wonderful achievement to perform and something to be celebrated. Enjoy your time in the spotlight, knowing you are ready and have a great talent to share.

The feedback we received from students and the audience was very positive following our concert. What a great feeling!

I'm sure your next performance will go smoothly with these pointers too.
